Standing Up for Victorville’s Local Economy and Long-Term Prosperity
Victorville Mayor Liz Becerra, along with other California mayors and business leaders, is urging Governor Newsom to veto Assembly Bill 98 (AB 98). This costly bill, authored by Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, poses significant challenges to business development, job creation, and economic prosperity in Victorville and across the High Desert.
Mayor Becerra urged Governor Newsom to veto the bill stating that, “AB 98 hurts the community of Victorville.”
At the Sept. 3 Victorville City Council meeting, Mayor Becerra voiced the City’s strong opposition to AB 98, emphasizing that it stifles local economic growth by limiting warehouse and logistics use standards and truck routes. These restrictions threaten Victorville’s ongoing efforts to attract jobs in manufacturing, warehousing, and aerospace at the Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA).
“AB 98 severely limits our job creation efforts, leading our residents to drive one to two hours to find employment in the Inland Empire and LA area,” said Victorville Mayor Liz Becerra. “Not only do these long commutes negatively impact the quality of life for our residents and their families, but long commutes also increase vehicle miles traveled and harm air quality.”
The City also raised concerns about the financial burden AB 98 places on Victorville, potentially costing hundreds of thousands in road improvement and traffic circulation updates.
